Almost anyone who owns an iPod or iPhone knows all about the thousands of “apps” available to use on such devices. They can provide the consumer with everything from entertainment to extremely handy tools such as maps or bookkeeping programs. The thing about most apps for such devices is that they don’t often present a way of protecting the collections of data contained inside. This is the reason that one of the best advances in iPod software is the creation of a two-way transfer application between the device and a PC.

This is a program that allows the individual to plug the iPod or iPhone device into their computer, and then open the easy to use iPod software that will then reveal all of the contents on the device as well as the computer. This would normally include any iTunes content on the PC along with the files in the Windows “Music”, “Videos”, and “Photos” files too. With this information revealed, the individual can then select to transfer, copy, or backup data of various types to the revealed locations.

For example, someone using such iPod software could choose to backup all of the videos and podcasts on their iPod to the “Videos” folder, or even a specially created “Backup” folder on their PC. They could do this once a week and use the folder as an assured, and totally secure way to protect the data.

In order to be useful, however, the program should be clear-cut and simple to operate. Most people don’t make a habit of backing up the music downloads and other materials on their iPod because it can be a time-consuming and complex process. For this reason, it is a good idea to give any iPod software a test or tryout before beginning to use it. If it allows the transfers to occur with only a minimal amount of effort and time, then it is probably a wise choice.
